Chapter 16

“You mentioned riding horses and never riding them bareback. Have you been riding long?” Chase asked as they made their way back to the ranch.

“I would say for a decent portion of my life,” she said, smiling fondly. “My mother first began my horseback riding lessons when I was eleven. I was scared in the beginning, but over time the fear melted away, and I loved riding. But I have never been around a wild horse before. When I saw this one and the way he behaved at first, it terrified me. I thought you were going to be hurt, and then I thought I might get hurt. You’ve got a certain magic with horses, you know?”

He chuckled. The subtle movement against her back awakened her senses and heightened her awareness of his body against hers.

“Yeah, something like that,” Chase muttered.

“How long have you been riding horses?” Renata asked.

“From the womb,” he teased.

Renata looked at him over her shoulder and laughed at the teasing twinkle in his eyes. “Seriously,” she urged.

“I was first put on a horse by myself when I was two years old,” Chase said.

“Oh, wow! You were young!” she exclaimed.

He nodded his head. “Yeah, I was told that I had been on one before then with my pa at a younger age. But by the time Chance and I were two, we started getting our first lessons.”

“Chance?”

“Yeah, my twin brother.”

“Oh, you’re a twin?”

“Yup. And I have an older brother, Garrett, and a younger brother, Logan. Chance is the older of the two of us. But yeah, we learned pretty young as did my other two brothers. I’ve been around horses all my life, different breeds and temperaments.”

“You said something about rodeos earlier. Tell me about that,” Renata encouraged, wanting to learn more about this man, and trying to drink up every detail that he was willing to share with her.

“Well, Chance decided he wanted to go into the rodeo circuit a few years ago. He was pretty good at it, too, and was making a name for himself. He won all sorts of prizes until he became the champion on the rodeo circuit at a national level. It seemed that whatever contest he entered, he was bound to win. There was no stopping him,” Chase shared.

“I hear a but in there,” Renata prompted after Chase had grown silent for several seconds.

“There’s not really a ‘but’ it’s just that things changed for him after a while. He encouraged me to become involved. And it was something that I was interested in doing. I loved the challenge of being able to tame a wild animal, and the prizes haven’t been too shabby either. Chance loved it for those same reasons, plus the attention it brought from all the women,” Chase said.

“Oh, and I bet there were plenty of women hanging around you two,” Renata said, feeling something close to jealousy pouring through her.

She had no idea where that feeling had come from. She had no right to be jealous.
